Caveats

The current version of captrice is local-only software i.e. it stores data in users' browsers. While this has many advantages, they come with limitations. In future, captrice aims to be local-first which will address many of these caveats.

Important Notice for iOS and Safari Users

If you're using Captrice on:

  • Safari (any device)
  • Any browser on iOS (iPhone/iPad)
Your data may be automatically deleted after 7 days of inactivity. This is due to Apple's WebKit storage policies that affect all browsers on iOS devices.

Storage Risks Across All Browsers

Even on other browsers, your data is only stored with "best-effort" durability:

  • Data may be deleted when clearing browser data/history
  • Private/incognito browsing sessions delete data when closed
  • Browser storage quotas may limit data capacity
  • Data might be purged during low storage conditions

Recommended Actions

To protect your data:

  • Use desktop browsers when possible (Chrome, Firefox, Edge etc.). Bigger screens are any way more suitable for this app
  • Try to open the app at least once every 7 days if using iOS/Safari
  • Create regular backups via Dashboard > Backup/Restore. Store backups in cloud storage (Dropbox, Google Drive etc.). This also protects against data loss due to your device being lost or stolen.

Future Improvements

I'm working on a local-first approach that will include:

  • Optional cloud synchronization
  • Automated backups
  • Cross-device access to data
Note that this will be available as a paid feature and will require user signup. The current free version will always be available but users need to be extra careful about possible data loss due to the above reasons.
